The character of Jessica Fletcher is inspired by the character of Miss Marple, by the famous English writer Agatha Christie. Before offering the role to Angela Lansbury, the producers considered other actresses such as Jean Stapleton or Doris Day; but she had an advantage: she had successfully played Miss Marple in the successful film The Broken Mirror (1980), standing out in a cast of veteran stars (Elizabeth Taylor, Rock Hudson, Kim Novak…), so her choice offered guarantees and was a total success.
In 1988 there was an episode where Jessica Fletcher shared the lead role with her friend Dennis Stanton (Keith Michell), a former jewel thief who is now an investigator and becomes a male transcript of the writer. Stanton subsequently starred in eight more episodes of the series between 1989 and 1993.
Actress Angela Lansbury also played in two episodes of the series a red-haired cousin of Jessica, Emma MacGill, a musical actress who, like the writer, encounters more than one murder, but whose character is nothing like Jessica’s and also gets involved in romantic relationships.
