Since its inception, COMPUTAEX has been committed to biotechnology to respond to various projects in the field of health. Thus, in early 2011, the Foundation signed a collaboration agreement with the Genetics Unit of the Infanta Cristina Hospital in Badajoz and researchers from the University of Extremadura, which led to the start of the healthcare project Genetic Ultrasequencing using supercomputing techniques with LUSITANIA, thanks to which it was possible to diagnose pathologies with no answers until then. In addition, important advances were made in obesity, oncology and other hereditary diseases, with the aim of enabling specialists to anticipate the onset of certain diseases and apply more efficient treatments during their early stages.

With the Estirpex (2013) and Estirpex-2 (2014) projects, COMPUTAEX continued this line of research under the RIS3 Strategy, with the aim of studying hereditary diseases by obtaining and analyzing variations in the genetic sequence of certain exomes, thanks to the use of the LUSITANIA supercomputer. Thus, the objectives of both projects corresponded to the study, development and deployment of services for relevant economic sectors in the region, which could benefit from massive NGS genetic sequencing technology, supported by the use of supercomputing.
