A turning point was the acquisition of the newspaper on November 10, 1988 by Grupo Zeta. The publishing holding company founded by Antonio Asensio strengthened the newspaper, now based in the centrally located Camino Llano street. Germán Sellers de Paz retired and Félix Pinero became editor, with Amador Rivera as general manager of Editorial Extremadura. The masthead takes the current name of El Periódico Extremadura. More media, text editing programs and local professionals were added to promote quality journalism.
A transcendental milestone took place in 1999 with the creation of the digital edition at the web address www.elperiodicoextremadura.com. It was also the moment when the news offer was diversified and specialized with new free headers.
