Supreme court convicts luis alfredo ramos for parapolitics

Digitalization has taken over all areas of the daily life of mankind. The current context forces companies and individuals to live in a constantly changing environment. This is precisely Grupo Planeta’s argument to justify the closure of Círculo de Lectores.

Specifically, the publisher’s statement refers to the «change of habits in the consumption of citizens derived from the strong implementation of new technologies». The so-called Industrial Revolution 4.0 has radically changed the economy; competition is fiercer than ever.

The Internet sets the rules for everything: global commerce, communication, means of interaction, pedagogical strategies… It is therefore not surprising that the Readers’ Circle went from having more than 1.5 million subscribers at the end of the last century to around 300,000 at the time of its closure.

It mattered little that it was a long-standing club founded in 1962, sustaining it for any longer is not profitable. Since 2016 it was showing an average annual loss of close to 15% on sales and in 2018 a capital increase of €6 million was necessary.

History of mafalda: the character who was born to advertise

Following the closure of the Círculo de Lectores announced three weeks ago by the publishing group Planeta, the Biblioteca Nacional became interested in the fate of the archives and began negotiations, the first step of which is to ascertain the inventory of all the material. Planeta is proposing the transfer of the entire digital and physical archive of the Círculo, which is distributed between Barcelona and Madrid.

Sources in the publishing sector assure that the destruction of out-of-print books is a common practice, due to the cost of maintenance in the warehouses. In fact, the contracts with the authors already specify the final destination of the books. There are authors who reject the sale of copies that have remained in the warehouses to third party companies to prevent them from reappearing on the market as second-hand books at discounted prices. They prefer their destruction rather than being sold at bargain prices. «Books are destroyed and the resulting pulp is used to make new books» is a phrase repeated by the publishing sector to justify this industrial process.
