The black legend essay

Absolutely essential. Entertaining, exhaustively documented and written without complexes. A book that opens our eyes and makes us aware of many clichés that have reached the category of “historical truth”, to the point that we have taken them so much for granted that they are used as an explanation for any past or present crisis or disaster. A book not to be missed by any Hispanic American, solid in its foundations, with bibliography and theoretical resources always cited. The book has an agile prose that makes it very catching, without that academic smell that often ends up boring and sounding like a verse, the necessary look at our past made from the very roots of its protagonists, necessary to get rid of centuries of Anglo-Saxon indoctrination.

Spanish legend

“It is most certain that the astonishment and dislike that used to be held for heretics has generally been lost. Because as they meet them every hour in the streets, and are admitted to active and passive trade, and treated with courtesy, and see that many of them keep the truth more than Catholics, and are more pleasant to deal with, people become fond of them, which is a great inconvenience”.

This does not mean to underestimate the anti-Catholic repression deployed by Isabella and continued for decades by her successors to the throne; and it is no less true that, in terms of inquisitorial repression, there were those who took advantage of us. The author is right, therefore, to point out that the Holy Office soon abandoned the prosecution of witchcraft cases, considering it a mere by-product of “ignorance or of hot-headed and deluded minds”. I will not dwell too much on the picture of colonization, in general terms perhaps the most vindictive chapter of the whole book, and in which it is not difficult to come back to issues dealt with in previous pages. We certainly have a problem if our high school students have not heard of the Jesuit missions, the Balmis expedition or Father Vitoria.
