It is probably Leonard Cohen’s best-known song, although it did not initially get the recognition it was expected to receive. In 1994, the American singer-songwriter Jeff Buckley recorded the version that made the song popular. Although it may seem so, the song’s lyrics are not religious praise, but a poem based on insecurities and worries in which Cohen uses Judeo-Christian symbolism to express the glory and sorrow of love.

Like other songs on his first album, ‘Songs of Leonard Cohen’, ‘Suzanne’ is also part of his book of poems ‘Parasites of Heaven’ (1966). The song has its origin in the encounter that the singer had with Suzanne Verdal, wife of the sculptor Armand Vaillancourt, in which the woman invited him to have tea at her house by the St. Lawrence River in Montreal (Canada). What happened there inspired Cohen to write the poem ‘Suzanne Takes You Down’ and the subsequent song. In 1994, in statements to the BBC, the Canadian made it clear that the encounter was a special situation, but that he did not have sexual relations with Suzanne, thus silencing any possible rumors.

In 1974 he began a musical partnership with pianist and arranger John Lissauer. The two toured Europe, the United States and Canada between late 1974 and early 1975 in support of Cohen’s new album, New Skin for the Old Ceremony, produced and arranged by Lissauer himself. In late 1975, Cohen and Lissauer performed a series of concerts in North America with a new band, which included new songs for an album in progress, co-written by Cohen and Lissauer and titled Songs for Rebecca.
